The National Sports Commission, NSC, has announced that henceforth, participating contingents in future National Sports Festivals must obtain insurance cover, and vehicles must be mechanically certified and insured before participating in the country.
This is coming on the heels of the tragic loss of 22 athletes from Kano State in a motor accident while returning from the recently concluded 22nd National Sports Festival, known as the ‘Gateway Games 2024’, which took place in Ogun State.
The NSC, in a statement issued by the director of press, Kehinde Ajayi, said the new safety regulation is mandatory for all participating contingents.
The statement noted that a compliance audit will take place ahead of future festivals to ensure all contingents adhere to essential safety, insurance, and welfare standards.
Additionally, the NSC said stronger monitoring mechanisms will be implemented during national events to prevent further tragedies.
