The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force have warned political parties against premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections. INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu said rallies, posters, and media promotions already underway violate Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act, which allows campaigns only 150 days before polling.
Yakubu, speaking at a roundtable in Abuja, urged amendments to empower INEC to sanction offenders. Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun pledged enforcement but questioned whether campaign restrictions remain effective in today’s media landscape. Former INEC boss Attahiru Jega called for tougher penalties and a dedicated Election Offences Commission.
Opposition parties accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of early campaigning, while the APC denied wrongdoing and backed INEC’s reforms. The Presidency also disowned campaign billboards promoting President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, stressing its commitment to lawful electoral processes.
