FG Reaffirms Commitment To Armed Forces’ Welfare

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to improving the welfare of the Nigerian Armed Forces and their families to enable them effectively carry out their constitutional duty of safeguarding the nation.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), stated this on Sunday at an interdenominational church service in Abuja, held as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

Speaking during the vote of thanks, Musa paid tribute to the sacrifices and patriotism of serving and retired military personnel, as well as the families of fallen heroes. “We honour with deep reverence the brave men and women who paid the supreme price in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” he said.

The minister also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as sustained efforts to strengthen the welfare and operational capacity of the military. He urged Nigerians to support government initiatives aimed at tackling insecurity, including terrorism, kidnapping and banditry. “We shall overcome these challenges if we work together as a nation,” he added.

In his sermon, the Most Reverend Uche Okafor of the Presbyterian Church, Abuja, preached from 2 Chronicles 32:5–8 on the theme “Gratitude, Encouragement and Spiritual Security.” He praised the Armed Forces for their courage and selfless service, noting that soldiers confront danger when others retreat.

“When there is danger, soldiers are sent. When others flee, soldiers confront danger,” Okafor said, urging Nigerians to continually encourage and support the military. He described military service as service to both God and humanity.

The cleric prayed for divine protection and strength for the troops and expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges. He also urged the military to remain professional, neutral and patriotic as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

The service was attended by senior government and military officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oloyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu; and the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Udieandeye.

Also present were representatives of the Navy and Air Force, members of the diplomatic corps, National Assembly officials, heads of ministries and parastatals, and members of the media.
