The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has affirmed its commitment to safeguarding future elections in Nigeria, rejecting claims that the party was solely responsible for alleged irregularities in the 2023 general elections.
APC spokesman Seye Oladejo cited a recent independent statistical analysis conducted as part of a Data Science master’s thesis at Pan-Atlantic University, which examined results from over 123,000 polling units nationwide. The study found that electoral anomalies were not confined to any single party.
According to Oladejo, the analysis showed the highest concentration of statistically significant irregularities in Labour Party strongholds, particularly in the South-East. States such as Anambra (24.9%), Enugu (16.7%), and Imo (10.9%) recorded higher anomaly rates compared with Lagos State, which recorded 2.3%.
The report highlighted a disproportionate number of “perfect scores” in Labour Party areas, vote distributions considered statistically unusual. The APC said these findings challenge narratives that the federal government or the ruling party manipulated the 2023 polls.
Oladejo noted that the study suggested electoral malpractice in 2023 followed “opportunity rather than ideology,” warning that some parties alleging rigging may have benefited from irregularities themselves.
The party acknowledged that while the 2023 elections were neither entirely fraudulent nor completely free of irregularities, malpractice had increasingly taken subtle forms, requiring closer monitoring and reforms.
The Lagos APC reiterated that it would resist any attempts by the opposition to manipulate future elections and warned against spreading misinformation or post-election narratives aimed at shaping public perception.
It expressed support for reforms including independent audits of election results, real-time transmission of results, strengthened technical capacity for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and prosecution of electoral offenders irrespective of party affiliation.
Oladejo stressed that the APC remains committed to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process at all stages, from preparation to post-election follow-up.
The party urged all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring credible elections and curbing irregularities ahead of the 2027 general polls.
