Nigeria’s Fuel Consumption Rises to 63.7 Million Liters Daily

Nigeria’s daily consumption of premium motor spirit (PMS) rose to 63.7 million liters in December 2025, up from 52.9 million liters in November, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The increase represents a sharp month-to-month rise of 10.8 million liters, or 20.4 percent. Total domestic supply of petrol also grew slightly, reaching 74.2 million liters per day in December, up from 71.5 million liters in November.

Data from NMDPRA showed that supply from the Dangote Refinery rose significantly to 32.01 million liters per day, up from 19.47 million liters in November, marking a 64.4 percent increase. However, the refinery fell short of its planned target of 50 million liters per day for the domestic market.

On December 11, 2025, Dangote Refinery reduced its petrol price to N699 per liter, later adjusting it to N739 per liter at MRS filling stations nationwide.

David Bird, Managing Director of Dangote Refinery, recently defended the N739 price, describing it as competitive in the current market.

However, Professor Emeritus of petroleum economics and energy expert, Wumi Iledare, criticized the pricing, calling it a market distortion.

The surge in consumption reflects increased domestic demand amid fluctuating supply levels from local refineries and ongoing price adjustments.

Industry analysts note that while Dangote Refinery is contributing more to domestic supply, bridging the gap between planned output and actual delivery remains a challenge.

The NMDPRA continues to monitor domestic fuel supply and consumption trends to ensure stability in the downstream petroleum sector.
