LASEMA Records 173 Deaths In Lagos Emergencies

No fewer than 173 people lost their lives in 1,156 emergency incidents recorded across Lagos State in 2025, according to data released by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

The agency’s statistics showed that although fatalities were recorded, the total number of emergencies in 2025 declined compared with figures from 2024.

Road traffic crashes accounted for the highest number of incidents, with 394 cases reported during the year. Tanker and truck-related accidents followed with 249 cases, while fire outbreaks accounted for 204 emergencies.

A monthly breakdown showed that February recorded the highest number of emergencies with 122 incidents, followed by April with 121 cases and May with 119.

By location, Alimosho Local Government Area recorded the highest number of emergencies at 180 incidents. Eti-Osa followed with 144 cases, while Ikeja recorded 139 emergencies.

Further data from LASEMA’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit revealed that 1,924 victims were rescued and resuscitated between January 1 and December 30, 2025. This included 906 adult males, 1,003 adult females, 13 boys, and two girls.

Within the same period, the agency recorded 173 fatalities, comprising 139 adult males, 32 adult females, and two boys.

Meanwhile, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency is fully prepared to respond to emergencies across the state in 2026. Speaking at a staff retreat on Friday, he said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had provided support to strengthen the agency’s disaster response capacity.

Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the retreat was organised to appreciate staff for their efforts in 2025 and to reinforce preparedness for the year ahead. He urged residents to cooperate with emergency agencies and avoid unsafe practices, stressing that prevention remains critical to effective disaster management.
