Analysts Warn As Defections Reshape 2027 Political Landscape

As the 2027 general elections approach, Nigeria’s political scene is witnessing a surge in defections, with many politicians moving from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), raising concerns about the health of the country’s democracy.

Political observers warn that the growing dominance of a single party could weaken democratic competition, noting that democracy thrives on plurality, strong opposition and meaningful choices for voters.

Speaking with Emirate Fm correspondent, Omotolani Dare, Kwara State–based human rights activist and public policy analyst, Comrade Mashood Lanrey Osho, urged Nigerians to place less emphasis on political parties and focus more on the integrity, competence and track records of individual candidates.

Osho argued that political parties should not be the central focus of Nigeria’s democratic process and cautioned against blaming institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the wave of defections.

Another political analyst, Ajoge Quadri Cornel, attributed the trend to the struggle for power, explaining that politicians often gravitate towards where authority and influence are concentrated. He noted that many believe alignment with the ruling party offers access to federal backing, which is seen as an advantage in elections.

Also commenting on the issue, Mr. Rotimi warned that frequent defections undermine internal party democracy and discipline, weakening party structures and leadership.

He added that mass defections have damaged Nigeria’s democratic development by creating leadership gaps within parties and portraying politicians as opportunistic and uncommitted to public trust.

Analysts further observed that while ordinary citizens are directly affected by these political realignments, many remain disengaged from the political process, partly due to perceptions of overwhelming institutional support for the ruling party.

As defections continue ahead of the 2027 polls, observers are urging Nigerians to remain politically engaged and to assess candidates based on competence and character rather than party affiliation.
