INEC Says Ready For 2027 Polls Despite Electoral Act Delay

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians of its readiness for the 2027 general election, despite delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act by the National Assembly.

INEC said it has already concluded its election timetable and schedule of activities, pending the outcome of legislative action on the proposed amendments.

The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with representatives of civil society organisations.

Amupitan said INEC has submitted its recommendations on the proposed amendments to the National Assembly but acknowledged that the timing of the lawmakers’ action could affect aspects of the election schedule.

He noted that until the amended law is passed, the commission will continue to operate under the existing Electoral Act.

The INEC chairman reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a credible and transparent election in 2027, while urging lawmakers to conclude work on the amendments in good time.
