Member of the House of Representatives representing Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, has raised the alarm over escalating violence in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. He called on the government and security agencies to take immediate measures to halt killings and abductions in the area.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Ugbor condemned the rising spate of attacks, particularly by Fulani herdsmen, describing the situation as alarming and long-standing. “Border communities have suffered from cycles of violence for over 15 years, with victims receiving little support or prospects for resettlement,” he said.
The lawmaker highlighted Turan and Ikyurav-ya communities, which border Cameroon and Taraba State, as emerging epicenters of violence due to their vast terrain and mineral-rich lands. He warned that without urgent intervention, insecurity in the area could worsen.
Ugbor recommended the activation of the Border Patrol Unit, development of the Cameroon border into an export processing zone, and clear demarcation of boundaries between Benue and Taraba States. He also called for the resettlement of displaced persons, restoration of farmlands, and a strict ban on illegal mining, along with comprehensive mapping of mineral resources.
He stressed that implementing these measures would bring lasting peace, strengthen security, and support sustainable development for future generations.
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to community policing and pledged to provide relief materials to residents affected by the violence in his constituency.
Ugbor cited recent federal approvals of key institutions in the area, including a National Open University Study Centre, Forestry Research Centre, Technology Incubation Centre, Infectious Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, and a Federal Medical Centre, emphasizing that security improvements are essential to safeguard these developments.
He expressed confidence that tackling insecurity would allow the constituency to fully benefit from democratic dividends and ongoing developmental initiatives.
Ugbor extended condolences to families affected by the violence and vowed to continue advocating for the protection of lives and property in Benue State.
