The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway against driving against traffic as rehabilitation works continue on the Kara Bridge, stressing that violators will be penalised regardless of their status.
The Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Kehinde Hamzat, issued the warning on Monday during an on-the-spot assessment of traffic conditions along the busy corridor.
Addressing complaints that some security and government vehicles were flouting traffic rules, Hamzat described the practice as unacceptable and an abuse of office. “It is wrong. Many times, we take their details and report appropriately,” he told Channels Television.
According to him, internal disciplinary measures imposed by the offending agencies are often more severe than the sanctions issued by the FRSC, as such actions damage both institutional and personal credibility.
Traffic congestion has worsened following the commencement of repair works on the Kara Bridge, which the FRSC earlier said would last at least two months. The damaged sections, Hamzat noted, have contributed to several crashes, particularly when motorists attempt to evade oncoming vehicles.
He explained that to fast-track the project, two expansion joints are being repaired simultaneously using faster-curing materials, while overloading by heavy-duty vehicles has been identified as a major factor in the road’s deterioration. He added that weighbridges would be deployed to curb the problem.
Hamzat said FRSC personnel had been strategically deployed along the expressway to prevent motorists from driving against traffic, particularly at flashpoints such as Warewa and the Opic turning.
While acknowledging delays for motorists travelling into Lagos, he stressed that discipline was essential to avoid a complete gridlock. “If traffic keeps moving, it is better than blocking both sides of the road,” he said.
The sector commander disclosed that several motorists had already been arrested for traffic violations and would face fines or prosecution, adding that FRSC officers, working with other security agencies, would remain on duty throughout the duration of the repairs to ensure compliance.
