Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South in the Nigerian Senate, has publicly criticised the recent electricity tariff hike and the banding system introduced by the Federal Government through the Minister of Power. he described the A, B, C electricity banding as discriminatory and unconstitutional, arguing that it creates unfair access to power and burdens ordinary Nigerians with higher costs while service quality remains inconsistent.
The issue was extensively discussed today on Emirate Radio’s Standpoint Programme, hosted by Mrs. Bukola Omoshewo. The show featured two guests: Dr Adeyanju Adeola, a social and public commentator, and Comrade Abdulqadir Sadiq, who is also a political analyst.
Dr Adeola, noted that some might view Ndume’s actions as political activism, but stressed that he is simply doing what is expected of a senator protecting citizens’ rights and drawing attention to systemic issues in Nigeria’s electricity supply, adding that the unreliability of power in the country, pointing out that even scheduled maintenance often leaves consumers in darkness, describing the current system as taking us back to the pre-colonial era.
Comrade Abdulqadir Sadiq, also commended Ndume for fighting for the masses. while explaining that the tariff and banding system unfairly categorizes Nigerians, with some enjoying 24/7 electricity under Band A while others are limited to 12 hours under Bands B and C, yet are still charged higher rates.
Meanwhile, both guests emphasized that Ndume’s protest highlights a wider issue of electricity inequity in Nigeria, calling on the government to implement a more fair and transparent system that treats all citizens equally.
