Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of opposing the electronic transmission of election results out of fear of losing future elections.
Amaechi said opposition parties must unite to resist what he described as attempts by the APC to dominate the electoral process, warning that silence could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
“I believe the opposition parties should come out—PDP, ADC, everybody—to protest against the attempt of one party to take over the system,” Amaechi said.
He dismissed claims that such protests could be hijacked by opposition groups, questioning the ruling party’s resistance to electronic transmission. “What are they afraid of? They claim to have 31 governors. If they have done well, the people will show it,” he added.
Amaechi also expressed surprise that the APC would feel threatened despite boasting of widespread defections from opposition parties and its strong presence across the states.
He voiced doubts that Senate President Godswill Akpabio or President Bola Tinubu would address public concerns on the issue, insisting that opposition parties and civil society groups would continue to apply pressure until the policy is reversed.
Meanwhile, security was tightened around the National Assembly on Tuesday as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force blocked major access roads ahead of an emergency Senate plenary session.
The protest is being coordinated by human rights activist Aisha Yusuf in collaboration with several civil society organisations, which began demonstrations on Monday over the controversial decision.
