The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for four weeks to allow the Federal Ministry of Works to rehabilitate deteriorated sections of the road.
The closure, set to begin on Wednesday, February 11, will affect both inbound and outbound lanes between U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate, according to a statement from the state Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
“The rehabilitation work is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, 11 February 2026, and end on Wednesday, 11 March 2026,” the statement said, emphasizing that the project will span four weeks.
To minimise traffic disruption, the project will be carried out in two phases. Phase One, affecting Abeokuta-bound traffic, will run from February 11 to March 4, covering the section from U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate.
During this phase, vehicles heading toward Abeokuta will be diverted to one half of the carriageway, approximately 20 metres away from the active work zone. Traffic will be restored to full access on completed sections as rehabilitation progresses. Lagos-bound traffic will remain free-flowing during Phase One.
Phase Two, from March 4 to March 11, will target Lagos-bound traffic between Obadeyi Bus Stop and Ekoro Junction. Vehicles from Abeokuta will be redirected to one half of the road while work continues on the other, with Abeokuta-bound traffic moving uninterrupted.
Osiyemi explained that in both phases, work will be carried out on one lane at a time, allowing traffic to alternate between completed and ongoing sections.
The commissioner assured road users that adequate traffic management measures will be in place throughout the project and urged motorists to obey signage and cooperate with officials on duty.
He also advised commuters to plan their journeys carefully, exercise patience, and allow extra travel time as the essential repairs are carried out in the interest of all road users.
The announcement aligns with broader ongoing infrastructure interventions across major federal highways in Lagos and its surrounding areas.
