Man Killed In Lekki Crash, Wife Critically Injured

A man was killed and his wife critically injured on Thursday in a road accident involving a granite-laden articulated truck and a Toyota saloon car at Eleko Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway in Lagos State.

The crash occurred early in the day and drew an emergency response from operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other agencies.

According to traffic authorities, the truck, reportedly travelling at high speed from the Epe axis, suffered brake failure as it approached Eleko Junction. The driver lost control, veered off its lane and collided with the Toyota car heading from Ajah toward Epe.

The impact caused the truck to overturn onto the car, crushing it. The male driver of the Toyota was trapped in the wreckage and later extricated by rescue officials and bystanders. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His wife, who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained severe injuries and was rescued alive. She was taken to a medical facility by an FRSC ambulance, while the deceased was moved to a morgue.

Authorities said the truck driver fled the scene shortly after the crash. Officers from the Akodo Police Division provided security and maintained order during the rescue operation.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the crash as tragic and preventable, urging motorists to ensure vehicle roadworthiness and adhere to traffic regulations.

In a separate incident later the same day, a 33,000-litre fuel tanker caught fire around midnight at Ile-Zik inward Magboro on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway. LASTMA’s rescue team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service contained the blaze before it escalated.

Traffic was temporarily diverted into the Bus Rapid Transit corridor during firefighting operations and later restored after the scene was cleared. Authorities reiterated their commitment to road safety and cautioned drivers against reckless driving and mechanical negligence.
