NSC Backs Nigeria in FIFA Eligibility Dispute

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has expressed confidence that Nigeria will receive a favourable ruling in its ongoing eligibility dispute with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The dispute followed the Super Eagles’ 4–3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs last November.

In response to the defeat, the Nigeria Football Federation lodged a formal complaint with FIFA, questioning the eligibility of some Congolese players.

The petition centers on DR Congo’s national laws, which generally restrict dual citizenship for adults.

The NFF raised concerns that some players representing DR Congo may also hold European passports, potentially conflicting with the country’s legal requirements for national team participation.

Dikko stated that Nigeria is awaiting FIFA’s decision on the matter.

He maintained that the complaint was filed in line with established procedures to ensure fairness and compliance with international regulations.

The outcome of FIFA’s ruling is expected to determine whether the eligibility concerns will impact the result of the playoff match.

Nigerian football authorities say they remain hopeful that the matter will be resolved in the country’s favour.
