The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it rescued 1,075 injured victims from road accidents across Lagos State in 2025, citing improved emergency response and enforcement measures.
The agency said the figure reflects progress in its campaign to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related casualties. According to LASTMA, officers were strategically deployed to accident-prone areas and major corridors to ensure rapid intervention.
It attributed the rescues to stronger enforcement, technology-driven monitoring, and collaboration with other emergency responders. The agency noted that prompt action at crash scenes helped reduce the severity of injuries and restore traffic flow.
In addition to rescue operations, LASTMA reported significant enforcement activities during the year. A total of 5,581 private vehicles were impounded for various traffic violations, while 10,825 commercial vehicles were apprehended for offences including reckless driving, overloading, obstruction, mechanical faults, and disobedience to traffic rules.
The authority also disclosed that 760 vehicles were arrested for driving against traffic, describing the offence as a major contributor to fatal accidents.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency’s performance underscores a shift toward proactive traffic management anchored on technology, intelligence-led enforcement, and public education.
He noted that officers are often first responders at accident scenes, working alongside medical and emergency teams to secure crash sites and assist victims. Many of the incidents, he added, were linked to speeding, mechanical failures, fatigue, impaired driving, and one-way violations.
Bakare-Oki emphasized that vehicle impoundment forms part of a broader strategy to deter traffic violations and remove unsafe vehicles from the roads. However, he stressed that enforcement alone cannot ensure lasting road safety without cooperation from motorists and transport operators.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to sustained enforcement, stakeholder engagement, and public awareness campaigns aimed at promoting responsible driving across Lagos State.
