Unilorin VC Backs Artisan Training Initiative

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), has underscored the growing relevance of skilled artisans in a rapidly changing global economy shaped by technological advances, including artificial intelligence.

Prof. Egbewole made the remarks on February 23, 2026, while receiving members of the Kwara State Artisans Programme (KSATP), led by its Chairman, Prof. Abdulraheem Yusuf, at his office. The delegation briefed him on plans for an upcoming artisan training workshop in the state, an initiative introduced by the university months earlier.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye, the Vice Chancellor said developments in Europe and the United States show rising demand for technical professionals such as plumbers and other skilled workers. He noted that this trend holds lessons for Nigeria’s workforce development strategy.

According to him, the university’s collaboration with artisans aligns with its entrepreneurship agenda and community engagement mandate. He added that while the programme focuses on capacity building, its long-term significance lies in preparing for future labour market realities. He projected that universities may eventually integrate artisan training into formal academic programmes.

Earlier, Prof. Yusuf said the initiative was designed to address gaps in professionalism, safety standards, entrepreneurship and digital skills among artisans in Kwara State, despite their strong technical abilities.

He explained that the training would follow a 30 per cent theory and 70 per cent practical format, featuring demonstrations, workshops, simulation exercises and industry sessions. Participants will be assessed through project work, with certification awarded at a minimum pass mark of 50 per cent.

Yusuf said preparations are advanced, with curriculum modules finalised, training manuals completed, artisan associations engaged and a monitoring framework established. About 85 guests and sponsors are expected at the launch, alongside selected artisans and university officials.

He added that the programme aims to improve technical competence, boost income potential, enhance safety compliance and strengthen collaboration between the university and local communities.
