The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has said it has not received any request for evacuation or emergency assistance from Nigerians residing in Iran, despite rising tensions in the Middle East.
The development comes as hostilities involving Iran, the United States and Israel continue to disrupt regional air travel and heighten global concern. The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier stated that it was closely monitoring the situation.
NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said the commission remains on alert but has not been contacted by any Nigerian in Iran seeking help.
“I’m not saying there are no Nigerians there, I’m only saying nobody has sent any distress call,” Balogun said.
He acknowledged that flight disruptions were expected due to the ongoing conflict, noting that airlines would not operate in unsafe conditions. According to him, temporary ceasefires are sometimes arranged to allow stranded passengers to evacuate, but such measures had not yet occurred.
Meanwhile, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed that airspace closures in parts of the Middle East have affected flight operations to and from Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its management, FAAN said several international carriers, including Emirates and Qatar Airways, had cancelled or delayed flights to Middle Eastern destinations. It advised affected passengers to contact their airlines directly for updates, rebooking options and further guidance.
The authority said it is monitoring the situation in collaboration with aviation stakeholders and will provide updates as necessary, expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to travellers.
The disruptions followed coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel on strategic locations in Iranian cities, including the capital, Tehran, further escalating tensions in the region.
