The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has condemned the alleged physical assault of nursing officer Hafsat Ibrahim Musa by a serving soldier at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno State.
According to a petition dated March 2, 2026, addressed to the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, the incident reportedly occurred on February 26, 2026, around 7:05 p.m., in the Accident and Emergency Unit. The petition demands an unreserved written apology from the Nigerian Army.
The petition, signed by the UMTH chapter chairman, Comrade Halima Mustapha, through Secretary Comrade Shuaib Yuguda Gadzama, was also copied to NANNM-FHI NAC, NANNM BSAC, SERVICOM UMTH, the Chief Security Officer of UMTH, and the 7 Division Nigerian Army.
NANNM described the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable,” noting that the nurse, who was on duty, was left in physical, emotional, and psychological distress.
“The unit leadership vehemently condemns this act that left our member, a young, hardworking, compassionate, and dedicated nurse, in distress,” the petition read.
The association highlighted a broader trend of assaults on frontline healthcare workers in Nigeria, warning that such incidents endanger professionals tasked with saving lives.
“The frontline healthcare workers, especially nurses and doctors, have recently faced verbal and physical attacks from patients and relatives, often without measures to prevent recurrence,” the petition added.
NANNM demanded urgent redress within one week, including a full medical examination of the affected nurse to assess injuries and treatment where necessary.
The union also called for a formal apology from the Nigerian Army to UMTH management and staff and urged the hospital to implement stronger security measures for frontline health workers.
“We look forward to your timely action on this matter,” the petition concluded, emphasizing the need for swift intervention to protect healthcare personnel.
