A former member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Mathew Simon Gwazah, has called on factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to resolve their differences and unite for the stability of the party and the growth of democracy in Nigeria.
Gwazah, who represented the Zangon Kataf constituency, said internal disputes within the party have contributed to the recent wave of defections to other political parties.
Speaking in Kaduna, he urged party leaders involved in the crisis to “sheathe their swords” and work toward reconciliation in the interest of the PDP and the country’s democratic system.
According to him, the disagreements within the party are being driven by a few leaders pursuing personal interests, while the party’s grassroots membership across the country remains largely intact.
Gwazah argued that many Nigerians still identify with the PDP and want the party to return to power, citing what he described as improved living conditions during the party’s administration between 1999 and 2015.
He said the PDP continues to maintain strong organisational structures across the country and remains a formidable political force capable of winning elections if internal conflicts are resolved.
The former lawmaker also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming its presence is weaker in many parts of the country compared to the PDP’s grassroots network.
Despite recent defections, Gwazah insisted that the PDP remains strong in several areas, particularly in Southern Kaduna, where he said party members have remained loyal.
He expressed optimism about the party’s future, urging supporters to remain patient and mobilise voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gwazah also said he remains willing to serve again in public office if called upon by his constituents, pledging to use his experience to improve the welfare of his community.
