Fire Guts Shops at Jos Terminus Market, No Casualties Reported

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has concluded its emergency response following a fire outbreak at Jos Terminus Market.

In a statement released on March 15, the agency said the fire started a few minutes before 10 p.m. on Saturday in a section of the market located in Jos North Local Government Area.

A joint assessment conducted by NEMA and other emergency responders showed that several temporary stalls and lock-up shops were partially or completely destroyed by the blaze.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire may have been triggered by a power surge.

Firefighters from the Federal Fire Service and the Plateau State Fire Service responded quickly, deploying fire engines to the scene and containing the fire before it spread to other parts of the market.

Authorities confirmed that no deaths or serious injuries were recorded during the incident.

During the operation, the Head of NEMA’s Jos Operations Office, Bintu Wana, conveyed the sympathy of the agency’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, to traders who lost shops and goods in the fire.

Several organisations participated in the response and damage assessment, including the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, alongside local vigilantes and community volunteers.

Officials of the Plateau State government and market leaders commended the swift intervention by emergency agencies, saying their quick response helped limit the scale of the damage.
