The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed all political appointees in his administration who intend to contest in the forthcoming elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was issued through a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Tofa, and communicated via an official circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim.
The circular cited Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which outlines requirements for public officials wishing to participate in elections, emphasizing that compliance is mandatory.
According to the statement, the measure is aimed at promoting neutrality, accountability, and integrity within the public service, while ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the next election cycle.
“Political appointees who intend to contest in the forthcoming elections are required to resign or retire, as applicable, on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026,” the circular stated.
All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have been instructed to publicize the directive widely and ensure strict adherence by affected officials.
The instruction aligns with broader electoral regulations designed to prevent the misuse of public office, reduce incumbency advantages, and safeguard the neutrality of government institutions during political campaigns.
Similar directives have been issued at the federal level. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently instructed political appointees in his administration who plan to contest the 2027 elections to resign by the same deadline.
Other states, including Niger State, have implemented comparable measures to ensure compliance with electoral laws governing public office holders.
The Kano State government described the move as part of its ongoing efforts to reinforce transparency, uphold electoral laws, and maintain fairness in the political process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
