A woman who recently gave birth to quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital has died due to complications following the delivery, the Kano State Ministry of Health has confirmed.
The deceased, Hafsatu Yusuf, died around 2 a.m. on Thursday after experiencing persistent bleeding shortly after giving birth to the five babies—three boys and two girls—according to the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa.
He said medical personnel made efforts to stabilise her condition but were unable to stop the bleeding. “She had been bleeding since after delivery, and all efforts by doctors to control the situation were unsuccessful,” he stated.
Yusuf has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites at her residence in Hotoro.
The quintuplets are reported to be in stable condition and are currently receiving medical care at the hospital.
The incident occurred a day after the Kano State Government announced it would assume responsibility for the medical care of both the mother and her newborns.
Earlier statements from the ministry had indicated that the delivery was successful and that both the mother and babies were placed under special medical supervision.
The husband of the deceased, Malam Salisu Nufi’u, expressed appreciation to the state government, describing its intervention as timely support for the family.
Authorities have appealed to the public to assist the newborns with milk and other essential items, while the state government reiterated its commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare and reducing mortality rates across Kano State.
