Saraki Backs Southern Presidency, Rules Out 2027 Bid

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has stated that it is fair to allow the South to complete an eight-year tenure in the presidency and confirmed he will not contest the 2027 election.

Saraki made the comments on Thursday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme broadcast by Channels Television.

He explained that he supported the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decision to zone the presidency to the South in 2027, in line with earlier party agreements.

“I was one of those that supported that PDP should zone the presidency to the South in 2027. I abide by that decision and have ruled out contesting in 2027,” Saraki said.

The former Kwara State governor clarified that the 2023 PDP arrangement allowed candidates from any region to run, but discussions for 2027 emphasized a Southern presidency.

“So when the party met last year to discuss zoning for the 2027 election, I supported that the presidency should come from the South, and I align with that decision,” he added.

Saraki emphasized that his position is consistent with the party’s approach to regional rotation and internal consensus building.

He reiterated his commitment to PDP’s directives and stated that his decision reflects respect for party agreements and the principle of fair regional representation.

Political analysts have noted that the zoning arrangement is intended to balance regional interests and maintain party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Saraki’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions within major parties about presidential zoning and candidate selection for the next electoral cycle.
