President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Ogun State over the weekend, highlighting the state’s infrastructure achievements and expressing optimism about Nigeria’s development prospects. The visit followed a recent trip to Jos, Plateau State, where he witnessed the impact of insecurity on local communities.
During his tour of the state capital, Abeokuta, Tinubu commissioned several landmark projects, including the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Iperu and the state-owned Gateway Airline, equipped with two new aircraft. The president also inaugurated logistics and trade infrastructure, including a ₦73 billion Nigeria Customs Service hub with residential, training, and healthcare facilities.
The president received updates on mobility and security initiatives, including 1,000 electric motorcycles and 80 security vehicles. He praised Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for leveraging federal resources and state revenues to implement transformative infrastructure projects.
Governor Abiodun highlighted his administration’s achievements, noting that Ogun State’s internally generated revenue rose from ₦40 billion to ₦250 billion, while GDP increased from ₦4 trillion to ₦17 trillion over seven years. He outlined 1,600 kilometres of road construction, the Gateway International Convention Centre, affordable housing projects, 140 primary healthcare centers, a 200-bed medical center of excellence, and independent power initiatives.
The president described the projects as examples of “vision matched with discipline,” emphasizing the long-term benefits of investing in people-centered infrastructure. He noted the state’s airport and logistics hub would strengthen trade, export capacity, and connectivity with neighboring states.
High-profile dignitaries attended the commissioning events, including the Senate President, governors from multiple states, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-House of Representatives Speaker Dimeji Bankole, and leading business executives such as Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and Femi Otedola. Security and regulatory officials were also present.
Tinubu lauded the state for practical, visible development, praising the administration’s focus on transportation, energy, and economic corridors. He highlighted the deployment of electric motorcycles as a modern, sustainable transportation solution.
Governor Abiodun acknowledged federal support for initiatives including the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas programme, NELFUND, rail modernization, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, and reforms in the oil and gas sector. He emphasized that Ogun’s projects are aligned with leveraging its proximity to Lagos for economic growth.
The president expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to address insecurity and terrorism while continuing infrastructure development. He commended Ogun State’s approach as “deliberate and built to last,” calling for sustained focus on practical, inclusive development.
Tinubu concluded: “Our investment is about our people. Today’s foundation is for tomorrow’s prosperity. Development must touch every level, and I am pleased to see that principle taking shape in Ogun State. The work continues.”
