The Federal Government says the proposed Regional Fodder Hub for the North-Central and South-West corridor is expected to help address insecurity linked to livestock movement across parts of the country.
The Special Adviser to the Minister of Livestock Development, , disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ilorin, Kwara State. He said the initiative is designed to reduce the need for herders to travel long distances in search of feed and water, a situation often associated with conflicts.
According to Iyayi, the Federal Government is prioritising the provision of reliable fodder and water sources for livestock producers as part of efforts to curb insecurity and improve productivity in the sector.
In his welcome remarks, the Director of Livestock Services in Kwara State, Mohammed Umar, said the project aligns with the development agenda of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Umar explained that the proposed structured pasture in Ilemona, located in Oyun Local Government Area, would provide a practical and sustainable solution to year-round livestock feeding challenges.
He added that the pasture would support settled livestock production and contribute to ongoing efforts to modernise the livestock sector in the state.
Also speaking, the Kwara State Project Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Olusoji Oyawoye, said the initiative comes at a critical time as Nigeria’s livestock sector faces increasing pressure from feed shortages, climate change, and resource-based conflicts.
Oyawoye noted that inadequate access to feed and water remains a major factor driving farmer-herder clashes and limiting productivity, adding that the Ilemona pasture is planned as a regional fodder bank to support livestock production in Kwara and neighbouring states.
