A former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, citing internal party conflicts and undemocratic practices.
Agbonayinma made the announcement at a press briefing in Benin City on Wednesday, stating that he plans to contest next year’s general election under a different political platform, which he will reveal soon.
He highlighted several reasons for leaving the APC, including a lack of respect for his leadership of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, the marginalization of Edo South in political appointments, and undemocratic tendencies within the party.
“As a foundation member from the days of AC, ACN, ACD, and now APC, we worked diligently to build an all-inclusive democratic institution. It is deeply distressing to witness the party in our constituency becoming the property of one or a few individuals interfering undemocratically in its political providence,” Agbonayinma said.
He added, “After evaluating recent developments and observing a series of anti-democratic activities, I regret to inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the APC with immediate effect.”
Agbonayinma emphasized that his resignation aligns with his personal convictions and vision for public service, while maintaining respect for committed party members and the institution itself.
The former lawmaker is known for supporting Governor Monday Okpebholo and has been active in promoting the governor’s achievements and campaigning against cultism in secondary schools across the state.
Observers suggest that internal party dynamics, including possible favoritism in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, may have contributed to his decision to leave the APC.
Agbonayinma’s resignation is expected to come as a surprise to his supporters and party leaders in Edo, given his strong influence in both his local government and the state.
He remains committed to public service and the pursuit of democratic principles, signaling that his political journey will continue outside the APC.
