Omah Lay Says Afrobeats Scene Split by Rivalries

Afrobeats singer Omah Lay has said the Nigerian music industry is largely divided along loyalty lines between supporters of Davido and Wizkid.

Speaking in a recent interview with The Fader, the “Soso” crooner described the Afrobeats landscape as fragmented, with artists and stakeholders often aligned with one of the two camps.

“The whole Nigerian Afrobeats scene is very separated. It’s like if you’re with Davido, you’re on one side; if you’re with Wizkid, you’re on the other,” he said.

Omah Lay also revealed that in 2024 he unfollowed Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy—widely regarded as Afrobeats’ “Big 3”—because he was dissatisfied with what he described as the direction of leadership within the industry.

“I felt like they started something with Afrobeats that we needed, but it was an old pattern,” he said.

Despite that earlier decision, the singer said his later collaboration with Davido on the track With You developed naturally and changed his perception of the artist.

He added that Davido’s background as someone from a wealthy family has contributed to criticism directed at him, but said the singer remains driven and focused. “He has nothing to prove to anybody,” Omah Lay said.

His comments highlight ongoing conversations about influence, leadership and generational shifts within Nigeria’s global Afrobeats movement.
