Atiku Condemns Airstrike on Jilli Market

Atiku Abubakar has condemned a Nigerian Air Force airstrike that struck Jilli Market along the Borno StateYobe State border, describing the incident as tragic and raising concerns about civilian protection during military operations.

Reports indicated that at least 30 people were feared killed when the strike hit the busy weekly market between Gubio and Geidam on Saturday evening, triggering panic among traders and residents.

The Nigerian Air Force confirmed carrying out precision airstrikes in the Jilli axis on April 11, 2026, under Operation Hadin Kai, targeting locations believed to be used by Boko Haram militants. However, the military has not confirmed civilian casualties or acknowledged a strike on the market itself.

In a statement posted on his X account on Sunday, Atiku described the development as a serious concern for national security operations and civilian safety.

“The Jilli market airstrike that killed scores of innocent traders is not just tragic, but a devastating failure that must outrage every conscience,” he said.

He questioned the continued exposure of civilians to risks during counter-insurgency operations, noting that citizens should not face danger from both insurgents and security responses intended to protect them.

Atiku also compared the situation with a recent United States military rescue mission, saying significant resources were deployed to protect a single citizen, and called for stronger safeguards for Nigerian lives.

“This demands urgent review, accountability, and decisive action to prevent a recurrence,” he added.

The former vice president extended condolences to families of victims and affected communities, urging authorities to prioritise civilian protection in ongoing security operations.
