An airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force has reportedly resulted in civilian casualties at Dilli Market along the border between Yobe State and Borno State.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the busy market located near Gubio Local Government Area. Authorities said details of the casualties were still being verified as of the time of reporting.
The spokesman for the Yobe State Police Command, Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the development, stating that security agencies were assessing the situation and compiling accurate information.
“We are aware of the incident that occurred at Dilli Market along the Borno–Yobe border, and we are currently gathering information on what transpired. At this moment, we do not have confirmed casualty figures,” he said, adding that the public would be updated once verification is completed.
Dilli Market serves traders and buyers from surrounding communities, including Giedam, as well as areas within the Chibok axis and Benisheikh.
Local sources said the airstrike was part of a military operation targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents believed to be operating in the area and allegedly extorting traders at the market.
A resident in Damaturu said the aircraft was reportedly tracking suspected insurgents but missed its intended target. The source claimed that at least 10 people were killed and several others injured, although officials have not confirmed the figures.
Emergency response efforts were ongoing, with injured victims receiving treatment at hospitals in Giedam and Damaturu.
As of press time, the Nigerian Air Force had not issued an official statement on the incident.
