Power Generation Rises to 4,300MW — FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria says electricity generation increased from 3,951 megawatts to 4,300 megawatts between March 28 and April 10, attributing the improvement to increased gas supply to thermal power plants.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Tunji said the rise in generation output followed the minister’s earlier assurance at the Power Sector Working Group meeting that electricity supply would improve within two weeks. He explained that gas supply to thermal plants increased from about 605 million standard cubic feet per day to more than 704 million within the same period.

He added that mechanical availability peaked at over 7,796MW in early April, while operational availability rose from about 4,208MW to more than 4,694MW, reflecting improved efficiency in converting available gas into electricity.

“Despite minor fluctuations recorded on some days, the overall trajectory points to a gradual recovery in the power sector, driven largely by improved gas supply and better coordination among critical stakeholders,” Tunji said.

To sustain the gains, Adelabu recently inaugurated a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee to strengthen coordination between gas producers and generating companies and address delivery bottlenecks in the gas-to-power value chain.

The minister also urged the new management of the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), led by Olusegun Adesayo and board chairman Ikechi Nwosu, to improve the agency’s internally generated revenue and reduce reliance on government funding for operations.

Adelabu further called for the establishment of additional meter testing centres nationwide and closer collaboration with the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria to address manpower shortages, particularly among meter installers.

He assured that the full board of NEMSA would be inaugurated soon and reiterated the ministry’s commitment to strengthening electricity supply through ongoing reforms and targeted interventions.
