The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as “Yayi,” as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached on Monday during a state strategic caucus meeting held at the party secretariat in Abeokuta and presided over by state chairman Yemi Sanusi.
The meeting was attended by Governor Dapo Abiodun, former governors Olusegun Osoba, Ibikunle Amosun, and Gbenga Daniel, as well as other key political stakeholders, including Senator Iyabo Obasanjo and members of the state and National Assembly.
Governor Abiodun formally announced Adeola as the party’s consensus choice and called on other aspirants to support the decision in the interest of unity within the party.
The announcement was followed by celebrations among party members, who chanted slogans in support of the senator.
In his acceptance speech, Adeola thanked party leaders for their confidence and pledged to uphold unity and continuity in the state if elected governor.
He said he was committed to strengthening cohesion within the APC and ensuring that Ogun State continues on what he described as a path of economic growth and stability.
“I assure you I will not let you down. I will do my utmost best to keep every member of our great party together and ensure unity across the state,” Adeola said.
He also promised to build on existing developments and work toward what he called a “new Ogun State” that would advance collective progress.
Party chairman Yemi Sanusi said the caucus meeting was convened to promote unity ahead of the primaries and to ensure a rancour-free selection process within the party.
The development comes amid wider zoning and consensus arrangements reportedly being considered by the APC in some South-West states ahead of the 2027 elections.
Following the announcement, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo announced the suspension of her governorship ambition, congratulating Adeola and thanking her supporters for their backing.
In a statement, she said the party’s decision had been accepted in good faith and called for continued unity within the APC as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
