The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasarawa State University Keffi branch, has warned the Nasarawa State Government that continued delays in addressing lecturers’ welfare demands could disrupt industrial harmony at the institution.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, branch chairperson Abdulmumini Loko said the briefing was convened to highlight unresolved issues affecting staff despite repeated engagements with authorities.
Loko cautioned that failure to urgently settle outstanding arrears and implement agreed benefits could force the union to take further action to protect members’ interests.
Among the union’s demands are the immediate implementation of the 40 per cent salary increment recently agreed between ASUU and the Federal Government, improved funding for the university, and payment of professorial allowances.
He also called for settlement of arrears of Earned Academic Allowance, outstanding 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increment arrears, as well as payments tied to the ₦70,000 minimum wage and the ₦35,000 wage award.
The union further urged the state government to domesticate the contributory pension scheme with prompt remittance of employer contributions, implement the compulsory retirement age for professors, regularly constitute visitation panels, and ensure retired professors receive full salaries as pensions.
Loko warned that continued delays could weaken staff morale, worsen brain drain among academic staff, disrupt academic activities, and undermine teaching and research quality at the university.
While reaffirming ASUU’s commitment to dialogue, he stressed that members’ patience was limited and urged the government to act quickly to resolve the issues.
He added that the union would consider lawful steps to defend members’ welfare and safeguard the integrity of the university system if the situation persists.
