FG Approves Major Allowance and Welfare Increase for Civil Servants

The Federal Government has approved a wide-ranging increase in allowances and welfare packages for civil servants, in a move aimed at improving earnings and boosting morale across the public service.

The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, who said the reforms had been approved by the Federal Executive Council.

According to her, the review covers workers under both the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), ensuring that the adjustments affect a wide range of public servants across different cadres.

She explained that the revised peculiar allowances have been adjusted across all grade levels, resulting in improved take-home pay for both junior and senior officers in the federal civil service.

The government also approved increases in key allowances, including Duty Tour Allowance (DTA), estacode, and book allowances. Walson-Jack said that virtually all allowances listed under the Public Service Rules had been reviewed upward.

A major highlight of the reforms is the approval of 100 percent Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending official training programmes, even when such training takes place within their duty location.

“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she said.

The government also introduced a new retirement benefit under the Contributory Pension Scheme, granting retiring civil servants 100 percent of their total annual emoluments as an exit package in addition to their pension, effective January 1, 2026.

Officials said the measure is aimed at ensuring dignity in retirement and providing stronger financial security for workers after leaving public service.

In addition, the government confirmed the operationalisation of the Employee Compensation Scheme, designed to provide financial support to civil servants in cases of workplace injury or death.

Analysts say the reforms come amid rising cost-of-living pressures and renewed labour demands for improved welfare, with expectations that the package could enhance productivity and morale within the public sector.
