The Prelate of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim, David Bob-Manuel, has cautioned Nigerians against vote-buying and sentiment-driven voting ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a visit to Cherubim and Seraphim churches in Ijebu Province, the cleric said such practices often lead to the emergence of unqualified leaders and undermine national development.
He urged voters to prioritise competence and integrity when casting their ballots, warning that accepting inducements in exchange for votes amounts to “selling one’s conscience.”
Bob-Manuel also advised religious institutions to remain neutral in partisan politics, stressing that the church should accommodate members across political divides.
“The church is not supposed to get involved in partisan politics… we should rather pray that God directs the people to choose the right leaders,” he said.
The cleric emphasised that fear of God and moral responsibility are critical to addressing Nigeria’s challenges, urging citizens to make informed choices during elections.
He noted that voters are familiar with political candidates in their communities and should assess their capacity rather than be swayed by financial or emotional considerations.
Beyond politics, Bob-Manuel encouraged church members to focus on spiritual growth and evangelism, rather than placing excessive emphasis on titles and ordination.
He called for renewed commitment to the church’s founding principles, urging members to intensify efforts in outreach and moral guidance.
