The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced plans to conduct medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples ahead of a mass wedding programme organised by the state government.
The Deputy Commander-General of the board, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, disclosed this in a telephone interview on Friday, saying the exercise will involve 1,500 men and 1,500 women selected for the initiative.
According to him, the screening is aimed at assessing the health status of all participants before the marriages are conducted. He explained that tests will cover HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype, and drug use.
The programme is being implemented under the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of ongoing social welfare interventions in the state.
Aminudeen said the beneficiaries are largely drawn from vulnerable groups, including widows, divorcees, and unmarried women, with the government providing financial and material support to facilitate the marriages.
He added that each bride will receive a dowry payment of ₦100,000 from the government, along with household items such as beds, mattresses, and pillows. In addition, beneficiaries will receive ₦100,000 to help start small businesses after marriage.
The Hisbah official stressed that participation in the medical screening is compulsory, warning that any prospective couple who fails to comply will be disqualified from the programme.
He noted that the initiative is part of efforts to support less-privileged citizens and address social and economic challenges affecting families in the state.
The mass wedding scheme was first introduced in Kano during the administration of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as a welfare programme for vulnerable residents.
