The Nigeria Police Force has provided an update on the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.
According to police authorities, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after Ogidi received a parcel from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The package, which he attempted to send onward to Sapele, was discovered to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm ammunition during a search.
Witnesses reportedly apprehended Ogidi and handed him over to officers led by ASP Nuhu Usman. However, instead of following standard procedures, the officer allegedly shot and killed the already detained and unarmed suspect.
Speaking at a press briefing, Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, said the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordered an immediate investigation through the Police Monitoring Unit.
Findings from the probe revealed that the officer’s actions amounted to professional misconduct, abuse of office, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace, resulting in what the police described as an unlawful killing.
The police emphasised that no level of criminal suspicion justifies extrajudicial action. The case file has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for legal review and prosecution.
Authorities also disclosed that the driver who delivered the parcel and two vigilante members involved in the initial arrest remain at large, with efforts ongoing to apprehend them.
The police assured the public and the victim’s family that justice would be pursued, stressing that no officer is above the law and that accountability will be upheld.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary pending autopsy, which will form part of the evidence in the prosecution process.
