LASTMA Moves to Curb Dispatch Rider Accidents in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it is stepping up efforts to reduce the rising number of accidents involving dispatch riders on major roads across Lagos State.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, noting that the agency is combining enforcement with stakeholder engagement to improve compliance with traffic rules.

Bakare-Oki said LASTMA has already written to union representatives of courier and dispatch riders as part of its ongoing road safety campaign.

According to him, the agency plans to hold a broader stakeholder meeting with courier operators and riders to strengthen adherence to safety regulations and reduce preventable crashes.

He explained that the engagement will focus on encouraging riders to prioritise both their personal safety and that of other road users while carrying out deliveries.

The LASTMA boss said the Lagos State Government remains committed to improving road safety and protecting lives and property across the state.

He added that the planned forum will bring together unions, service providers, and regulators to address operational concerns and improve compliance with traffic laws.

Bakare-Oki also highlighted LASTMA’s school traffic safety programme, which he said is designed to educate young people on road safety and responsible behaviour.

He noted that between January and March, the agency reached about 38 to 39 per cent of schools in Lagos as part of its awareness campaign.

According to him, the initiative is aimed at shaping long-term behavioural change and improving overall traffic safety in the state.
