Obi, Kwankwaso Join Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), urging party members to shun litigation and focus on national developmentThe two opposition figures were received into the party on Sunday in Abuja amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi, who recently resigned from the African Democratic Congress, said his move to the NDC was driven by the need for a stable political platform free from internal crises.

He said the country’s political environment has been repeatedly undermined by unresolved disputes and court cases, adding that such challenges have affected his previous party affiliations.

According to him, the NDC offers a “peaceful family” where members can focus on governance and national development rather than prolonged legal battles.

Obi also called on the judiciary and political actors to avoid actions that fuel internal party conflicts, stressing that time should be directed toward solving national problems.

Kwankwaso, on his part, said discussions with the NDC leadership showed alignment on key priorities such as education, youth empowerment, and national unity.

He urged supporters, including members of his political base, to register with the party, noting that preparations for political participation were ongoing.

The NDC leadership welcomed both politicians, describing them as influential national figures with strong grassroots appeal, particularly among youths and women.

Party officials said the new entrants reinforce the NDC’s growing national profile and commitment to inclusive governance and democratic values.

The development follows Obi’s recent exit from the ADC over internal disputes, marking another shift in Nigeria’s evolving opposition landscape ahead of 2027.
