Yahaya Bello Urges Kogi Politicians to Embrace Unity

Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has called on political aspirants in the state to prioritise unity, patience and leadership anchored on legacy as political activities intensify ahead of future elections.

Bello made the appeal during a meeting with members of the Kogi State House of Assembly, according to a statement issued Monday in Lokoja by his media office director, Michael Ohiare.

The gathering comes amid increasing political consultations and realignments in the state following the emergence of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, who succeeded Bello after winning the 2023 governorship election.

Bello, who governed the state between 2016 and 2024, remains a key figure in the state’s political structure within the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He congratulated aspirants who had obtained nomination forms, reminding them that political office is temporary and should be approached with a focus on lasting impact rather than personal ambition.

According to him, leadership is defined more by legacy than position, stressing that those seeking office must also recognise the sacrifices made by others who stepped aside in the interest of unity.

He also cautioned against financial inducement, directing that anyone asked to pay for political endorsement should demand a refund.

Bello urged aspirants to return to their constituencies, reconcile with stakeholders, and strengthen grassroots support ahead of elections, noting that unity and inclusiveness are critical to electoral success.

The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Umar Aliyu, commended Bello for his role in fostering stability and cooperation within the legislature, adding that such support has continued under the current administration.

He also reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting Governor Ododo’s policies, while disclosing that the number of legislative seats in the state has increased from 25 to 36 following the recognition of previously affected constituencies.
