Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called on the Federal Government to take retaliatory measures against South African businesses operating in Nigeria following reported attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Oshiomhole urged authorities to consider revoking the operating licences of companies such as MTN Group and MultiChoice Group, citing what he described as persistent hostility toward Nigerians abroad.
He argued that Nigeria should adopt a firm response to protect its citizens and assert its economic influence.
“I am not going to shed tears. If you hit me, I hit you. I think it is appropriate in diplomacy. It is an economic struggle,” he said.
Oshiomhole also suggested that Nigerians should take advantage of employment opportunities created by foreign companies operating within the country, particularly those from South Africa.
He maintained that while South Africa has the right to enforce its laws, attacks on Nigerians and destruction of their businesses should not be tolerated.
“We will not condone any life being lost… but to kill our people as if we are helpless, we will not allow that,” he added.
His remarks come amid reports of renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where several Nigerians have allegedly been targeted and their businesses destroyed, raising fresh concerns over the safety of foreign nationals.
