NSACC Urges Calm Over Xenophobic Unrest in South Africa

The Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce (NSACC) has called for calm, dialogue, and stronger bilateral cooperation following recent xenophobic unrest in parts of South Africa.

The appeal was made on Tuesday in Lagos by the Chairman of NSACC, Dr. Ije Jidenma, who expressed concern over the growing tensions and their impact on both communities and businesses.

Jidenma noted that the Federal Government of Nigeria has already responded through diplomatic engagement, ongoing investigations, legislative measures, and voluntary evacuation efforts aimed at protecting affected citizens.

She said the chamber is particularly worried about Nigerians and other African nationals residing in South Africa, as well as the broader implications for South African businesses and investor confidence.

“As an organisation committed to fostering strong economic and cultural ties between Nigeria and South Africa, we emphasise that moments like this call for restraint and constructive engagement,” she said.

According to her, both countries share a long history of cooperation rooted in mutual respect, trade relations, and a common vision for Africa’s development, which must not be undermined by periodic tensions.

Jidenma urged governments, civil society organisations, community leaders, and citizens on both sides to prioritise peaceful dialogue and adherence to the rule of law.

She stressed that protecting the safety and rights of all residents, regardless of nationality, remains essential for stability and trust between both nations.

The NSACC also called for sustained collaboration between Nigerian and South African authorities to address underlying issues, prevent further escalation, and strengthen conflict resolution mechanisms.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected. We remain committed to working alongside our partners to promote unity, economic resilience, and renewed focus on the shared opportunities that bind our two nations,” she added.
