FAAN Tightens Ebola Screening at Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced enhanced health surveillance measures at international airports following the recent Ebola Virus Disease outbreak reported in parts of Central Africa.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority said it is collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, and other agencies to strengthen passenger monitoring, particularly for travellers arriving from high-risk countries.

FAAN said passengers are currently being screened for symptoms linked to Ebola, while suspected cases would be immediately isolated for further medical checks in line with national and international health guidelines.

The agency added that it has increased staff sensitisation, reinforced emergency response systems, and improved coordination with relevant stakeholders to ensure quick action if necessary.

“While there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, FAAN remains vigilant and fully committed to safeguarding public health and maintaining safe airport operations,” the statement said.

The development follows the declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 17, 2026, that the Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

The outbreak, which is centred in the DRC’s Ituri Province and has spread to Uganda, has raised concerns across the region following reported infections and deaths.

FAAN urged travellers to remain calm, cooperate with health screening procedures, and promptly report any symptoms to airport health officials.
