The Nigerian Air Force has continued aerial surveillance operations to support efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The development was disclosed in a statement by NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame following a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh.
Governor Seyi Makinde said the Air Force deployed an aerial surveillance platform immediately after the abduction was reported, providing intelligence support for ongoing search-and-rescue operations.
According to the governor, information gathered from the surveillance missions has helped security agencies monitor developments and coordinate efforts aimed at securing the victims’ release.
Makinde commended the Air Force for its swift intervention, noting that the surveillance support became necessary while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial security assets are being assembled at the NAF Base in Lagos.
He explained that the state procured the platforms after consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to technical support, engineering services and pilot training.
The governor expressed confidence that the new assets would strengthen security operations in Oyo and neighbouring states once fully operational.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Suleh reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting rescue operations in collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders.
The victims, including pupils and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, were abducted on May 15 during an attack on Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities. One teacher was reportedly killed in captivity.
The incident sparked protests by teachers and civil society groups in Ibadan, while the House of Representatives and President Bola Tinubu have also called for intensified rescue efforts and additional security measures.
