IGP Urges Police Chiefs to Tackle Rising Insecurity

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to adopt proactive and intelligence-driven strategies in tackling the country’s growing security challenges.

Disu gave the directive during the monthly conference with senior police officers held on Tuesday at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The meeting brought together Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General, Commissioners of Police and other top officers to review the nation’s security situation and assess ongoing policing operations.

Addressing the officers, the IGP identified kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, banditry, cult-related violence, farmer-herder clashes and cybercrime as major threats confronting the country.

He stressed the need for stronger leadership, improved coordination and effective operational responses to ensure the police remain ahead of criminal elements.

According to him, the Force recorded several operational successes since its last conference in May 2026, including the arrest of eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects and 42 suspected cultists.

He also disclosed that police operations led to the rescue of 88 kidnapped victims, while 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition and 28 stolen vehicles were recovered nationwide.

The IGP further directed Commissioners of Police across the country to strengthen intelligence gathering and deepen community policing initiatives through regular engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and other community stakeholders.

Disu also urged senior officers to uphold professionalism, maintain discipline within their commands, prioritise personnel welfare and ensure compliance with operational procedures while improving media engagement to counter misinformation.
