The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has selected former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
The development was confirmed on Saturday by Leader Sampson, the immediate past chairman of the ADC in Rivers State, who disclosed that Amaechi has accepted the vice-presidential nomination.
Amaechi was among the aspirants who contested the ADC presidential primary but lost to Atiku in the race for the party’s ticket.
Before the primary election, the former minister had publicly stated that he did not purchase the party’s presidential nomination form with the intention of becoming a vice-presidential candidate.
Amaechi also rejected the outcome of the primary election, amid allegations by some aggrieved party members that the process was manipulated in favour of Atiku.
However, speaking on the latest development, Sampson confirmed that Amaechi had accepted the vice-presidential role.
Asked whether the former transportation minister had agreed to serve as Atiku’s running mate, Sampson responded simply: “Yes.”
The announcement brings together two prominent political figures as the ADC prepares for the 2027 general election campaign.
