President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed shock and sadness over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while being held captive by terrorists in Katsina State.
In a statement, the President described the late military officer as a distinguished patriot who served the nation with dedication before his retirement from the Nigerian Armed Forces.
General Abubakar was reportedly travelling to his hometown when he was abducted by armed terrorists. His death has drawn widespread concern amid ongoing security challenges in parts of the country.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, the government and people of Katsina State, and the Nigerian Armed Forces. He also expressed sympathy for the late general’s wife, who remains in captivity.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to confront terrorism and criminality, stressing that the government would not yield to demands from terrorist groups seeking the release of their members in custody.
“Bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terror should surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State,” Tinubu said, reiterating remarks he made during the June 12 Democracy Day celebration.
He maintained that the fight against terrorism would continue until criminal groups are defeated, urging Nigerians to remain united in support of security efforts.
According to the President, General Abubakar’s death should strengthen the nation’s determination to combat terrorism and insurgency without compromise.
Tinubu assured citizens that security agencies would continue to receive the support needed to protect lives and restore peace across the country, expressing confidence that Nigeria would ultimately prevail over its security challenges.
