Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described himself as a demanding administrator, saying contractors and government officials working with him must demonstrate the capacity to deliver projects on schedule.
Wike made the remarks on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Federal High Court Judges’ Quarters in the Katampe area of Abuja, one of the projects commissioned to mark the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The President was represented at the event by Kashim Shettima.
Speaking at the ceremony, Wike commended the Federal Government for investing in judicial infrastructure, noting that improved welfare and a conducive working environment are essential to strengthening judicial independence and the rule of law.
“The judiciary cannot be truly independent without a befitting environment to work in and improved welfare for judicial officers. These are the things that will strengthen judicial independence and uphold the rule of law,” he said.
The minister also praised the completion of the project within the stipulated timeframe, attributing it to close supervision and strict performance standards.
“I pity the Executive Secretary of the FCDA because working with me is very difficult. You have to show that you have the capacity to deliver,” Wike said. “I visited this project more than 20 times. My position is simple: if you collect government funds during the rainy season, you must work during the rainy season. There should be no excuses.”
He added that the completion of the judges’ quarters demonstrates the administration’s commitment to improving public infrastructure and changing perceptions about government project delivery.
Wike also urged judicial authorities to maintain the facility properly, stressing the importance of preserving public assets.
“We have challenges with maintenance culture, but I believe that if people treat public facilities the same way they treat their private homes, these structures will remain in excellent condition. I hope that when we return here in a year, the estate will still look exactly as it does today,” he said.
The newly inaugurated housing project is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to improve the welfare of judicial officers and strengthen the country’s justice system through enhanced infrastructure.
