Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has said the 28-kilometre section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway passing through Ogun State will be completed before the end of 2026, describing the project as a major catalyst for the proposed Ogun Deep Sea Port and other strategic investments.
The governor made the announcement while commissioning the reconstructed Gao-Ibiade Road in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. He said the coastal highway would unlock the area’s economic potential by improving access for industrial, maritime and commercial activities.
Abiodun praised President Bola Tinubu for initiating the 700-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, describing it as a transformative national infrastructure project that would boost trade, tourism, investment and regional connectivity.
He said officials handling the project had assured him that the Ogun section of the highway would be delivered before the end of 2026. According to the governor, the road alignment was designed to pass between three and five kilometres from the coastline to support the proposed Ogun Deep Sea Port.
“The absence of a reliable evacuation corridor had been the biggest obstacle to the Deep Sea Port. Today, with the coastal road coming just a few kilometres from the coastline, everybody now wants to build a port in Ogun Waterside,” Abiodun said.
The governor also disclosed that discussions with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) have advanced efforts to revive the Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas (OKLNG) project, while oil exploration activities have intensified in the area to establish commercial reserves.
He said the combination of the coastal highway, the proposed Deep Sea Port, renewed oil exploration and the revived OKLNG project would transform Ogun Waterside into a major economic hub, creating thousands of jobs and increasing the state’s revenue.
Abiodun further revealed plans to establish a naval base and dockyard within the proposed port complex to enhance maritime security and support commercial shipping. He also announced that reconstruction of the J4-Gao Road and the rehabilitation of the remaining stretch linking it to Abigi would begin soon.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to balanced infrastructure development across Ogun State, saying projects are being executed in all 20 local government areas to promote equitable growth and prepare communities for future economic opportunities.
