A chieftain of the Action Peoples Party (APP), Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, has condemned the alleged vandalism of the party’s facilities in Imo State, describing it as an attack on democratic values and political freedom ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Monday in Owerri, Amadi alleged that the party’s state secretariat, the Iwuanyanwu Glass House, was vandalised on Sunday, July 19, with its official signage and other facilities damaged.

He claimed the incident was part of a broader campaign of intimidation targeting opposition parties in the state, particularly the APP, with the aim of suppressing political participation.

According to Amadi, democracy can only thrive when political parties are free to canvass support and citizens can exercise their rights without fear of intimidation or violence.

“The destruction of party facilities constitutes a direct assault on the constitutional rights to freedom of association, freedom of expression and political participation. Resorting to intimidation instead of healthy democratic competition is a sign of political insecurity rather than strength,” he said.

Amadi maintained that no amount of harassment or politically motivated destruction would deter the people of Imo State from exercising their constitutional right to choose their leaders.

He called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure equal protection for all registered political parties.

He added that credible elections and sustainable development can only be achieved through justice, tolerance, respect for the rule of law and peaceful political engagement.
